Evaluation of the Chinese Intermittent Exotropia Questionnairesusing Rasch analysis

Objective To further refine the Chinese Intermittent Exotropia Questionnaires (CIXTQs) using Rasch analysis to improve reliability and validity. Methods In this cross-sectional study, rasch analysis was performed on the responses of 211 children with intermittent exotropia and their parents. The subjects were enrolled from June to August 2016 and completed each of the 4 CIXTQ health-related quality-of-life questionnaires: Children 5 to 7 years of age, children 8 to 17 years of age, proxies, and parents. Based on the score for each item, Rasch analysis was performed on the original CIXTQs using the following aspects: Dimensionality, response ordering, local dependence, infit and outfit analysis, subject targeting, and confirmatory dimensionality. Results Response ordering was adjusted to "never", "sometimes" and "almost" for child scale of 5-17 years old, while the proxy and parent scale remained 5 response options. For the parent questionnaire, 3 subscales were evident (psychosocial, function, and surgery). One of each item was removed from the psychosocial and function subscales. The person separation index (<1.5) and reliability coefficient were not very good on the questionnaire for the surgery subscale in the parent questionnaire. The resulting subscales had appropriate targeting. Conclusion The Rasch-revised CIXTQs may be a useful instrument for determining how intermittent exotropia affects the health-related quality of life of children with intermittent exotropia and their parents.
