Objective To investigate the expressions and significance of cullin-1 (CUL-1)protein and Ki-67 protein in lacrimal gland epithelial tumors. Methods The expression of CUL-1 protein and Ki-67 protein in 31 cases of surgical specimens of lacrimal gland epithelial tumors (11 cases of plemorphic adenoma, 12 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma and 8 cases of adenocarcinoma).The study included 19 males and 12 females with a mean age of (42.5±4.7)years (range from 34 to 68 years). The incidence was unilateral. Five cases of normal lacrimal gland tissue were used as a control. The immunohistochemical streptavidin-perosidase (SP) method was used. Positive cells were distinguished between passive cells and counted under 200x magnification. The ratios of positive expression were calculated and analyzed with a Chi-square test. Results ①Immunoreactivity for the CUL-1 protein was brown and was localized in nuclei and endoplasms. CUL-1 protein was over expressed in three tumors and under expressed in normal tissue. Positive expression ratios of the CUL-1 protein in plemorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were 43.10%,46.63% and 43.88%, respectively, which was significantly higher than that in normal lacrimal gland tissue using Chi-square analysis (x2=492.821, 550.069, 504.907, P<0.01), but there was no difference between benign and malignant tumors (P>0.05). ②Immunoreactivity for the Ki-67 protein was brown and was located in the nuclei. Ki-67 protein was over expressed in adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Positive expression ratios of the Ki -67 protein in adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were 48.59% and 53.88%, respectively. Ki-67 protein was under expressed in plemorphic adenomas and normal tissue. The positive expression ratios of Ki-67 protein in lacrimal plemorphic adenomas and normal tissue were 6.06% and 4.32%, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma (x2=454.522, 544.010,P<0.01).
