Abstract Scleral contact lenses are large diameter lenses different from the conventional corneal contact lenses which is characterized by positioning in the sclera, without contacting the cornea and filling the gap between the lens and the cornea with liquid to restore the flatness of the cornea. In recent years, due to its comfortableness and vision correction, it is widely used in patients with highly irregular corneal astigmatism, especially in the treatment of keratoconus. In this article, we reviewed the design principle of scleral contact lenses and their treatments and clinical researches in keratoconus.
