Dopamine (DA) plays an important role in the onset and development of myopia as an important neurotransmitter in the retina. This article reviews recent research on the role of DA in myopia, including the change in retinal DA content during myopia progression, the role of the dopaminergic system, the functions of DA receptors D1 and D2 in myopia progression and the interaction of dopamine signaling with other transmitters related to myopia. This review may provide some clues for further insights into the mechanisms of myopia as well as a search for the treatment of myopia.
