Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a new surgical technique that has been performed in China for the past four years. Its corrective results and clinical application have attracted attention. Patients have been followed up during this time and some research has been done to study the results. The generalized results of the related basic and clinical research can provide references for clinicians and primarily cover the refractive effects, postoperative corneal biomechanics, corneal sensitivity and nerve repair, aberrations and scattering, the corneal endothelium, laser energy, the corneal ultrastructure, etc., are discussed in this review.
