Objective To observe the expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in anterior and posterior retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells of guinea pig lens-induced myopia;to discuss the pathological mechanism of experimental myopia. Methods Ten two-week-old guinea pigs were ran-domly fitted with monocular lenses. Before and after the experiment, refractive error and the length of the optic axis were measured. The RPE cells of each group were cultured and passaged one genera-tion in vitro, Immunocytochemistry was used for RPE cell identification and to detect the expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in RPE cells. These data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 12.0 expressed in cytoplasm and was detected in all anterior and posterior RPE cells. The expression of HGF in experimental eyes was higher than in control eyes (P<0.05). Expression of HGF was almost the same between anterior and posterior sections (P>0.05). There was a significant difference in the expression of HGF between experimental eyes and control eyes (P<0.05). Conclusion Expression of HGF is detected in guinea pig RPE cells. It shows that HGF plays a role in the development of myopia.
