Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of the amblyopia and strabismus among Tibetan children in primary schools and kindergartens in Sangzhuzi District and its surrounding areas,Shigatse City, Tibet. Method: In this cross-sectional study, children in 9 primary schools and kindergartens in Sangzhuzi District and its surrounding areas, Shigatse City, Tibet were enrolled through a simple random sampling method. Visual acuity, autorefraction, and ocular alignments were tested for all the children. For children with corrected visual acuity less than 0.8 or lower vision than the corresponding age group, at least two-line interocular difference between eyes, strabismus, or young children with amblyopia risk of factors detected by refractive screening instrument, cycloplegic refraction were performed. The diagnosis of amblyopia and classification of strabismus were identified according to the criteria established by Chinese Medical Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. χ2 test was used for statistical analysis. Results: In the total of 2 268 Tibetan children who completed all the necessary examinations, 43 (1.90%) children were diagnosed with amblyopia and 65 (2.87%) were suspected with possible amblyopia, which contributed to a prevalence of amblyopia and possible amblyopia (108/2 268) of 4.76% in all.Among them, 69 cases of ametropic amblyopia (63.9%), 34 cases of anisometropic amblyopia (31.5%), 4 cases of strabismus amblyopia (3.7%), and 1 case of visual deprivationamblyopia (0.9%) were identifed. Strabismus was diagnosed in 42 children (1.85%) with 33 cases of concomitant exotropia (78.6%), 8 cases of concomitant esotropia (19.0%), and 1 case of restrictive esotropia (2.4%). Conclusions: The prevalence of amblyopia among Tibetan children was high in Shigatse city, Tibet, and mainly ametropic amblyopia.Suggesting an urgent need for establishing a prevention and treatment system for children with amblyopia and strabismus in this area.
