Objective To evaluate the fixation characteristics of patients with idiopathic macular holes; to investigate the relationship between retinal sensitivity at the macular, fixation stability and the diameter of the macular holes. Methods In this cross-sectional study,40 eyes of 38 patients with idiopathic macular holes were examined using optical coherence tomography (OCT)and MP-1 microperimeter. Characteristics and location of fixation were estimated. A correlation analysis of retinal sensitivity, fixation stability and the diameter of the macular holes was performed. Results Eccentric fixation was found in all patients with full-thickness macular holes (40 eyes). The location of the fixation area at the upper border of the hole in 28 eyes (70%),at the right border of the hole in 10 eyes (25%),one eye (2%) at the lower and one eye (2%) at the left border of the hole respectively. There was a weak inverse correlation between retinal sensitivity at the macular, fixation stability and the diameter of the macular holes (r=-0.15, -0.08, P<0.01).Conclusion Patients with full-thickness macular holes had eccentric fixation. The diameter of the macular holes may influence visual function.
